The gear, and why uprights and grands differ

An upright rides on a heavy-duty four-wheel piano dolly, strapped upright and blanket-wrapped, with two to four movers depending on weight and whether stairs are involved. We use a stair-climbing technique that keeps the load balanced one step at a time rather than muscling it, which is how cases get cracked. A grand is a different animal: we take the legs and the lyre off, stand the body on its straight edge on a padded piano board (a skid board), strap it down, and wrap the whole thing before it moves an inch. That board is what lets four movers control a 600-pound grand through a doorway and down a flight without the soundboard taking the strain. Pedals, music desk, and hardware are bagged and labeled so reassembly at the other end is exact.
